A Note About Choosing an Evaluation Provider

When seeking a psychological evaluation, particularly for autism, ADHD, learning disorders, intellectual functioning, or other complex diagnostic questions, it is important to understand who will actually be conducting and interpreting the evaluation.

We recommend looking for a licensed doctoral-level psychologist (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) whose education, training, and clinical experience include the type of evaluation you are seeking. A provider's use of terms such as testing, assessment, or diagnostic evaluation does not necessarily mean that they provide a comprehensive psychological evaluation.

You may also encounter clinics that advertise psychological or behavioral testing using technicians, master's-level clinicians, or other providers. Different mental-health professionals have different scopes of practice and levels of training, and some assessment services may appropriately be provided by professionals other than psychologists. However, for a comprehensive psychological evaluation, we encourage families to ask:

  • Who will conduct the evaluation?

  • What is that person's degree and professional license?

  • Is the provider a licensed psychologist (Ph.D. or Psy.D.)?

  • What specific training and experience do they have with the condition being evaluated?

  • Who will interpret the results and make the diagnosis?

  • Will the evaluation include a clinical interview, behavioral observation, standardized testing, and integration of information from multiple sources?

In Mississippi, licensed psychologists are regulated by the Mississippi Board of Psychology, which maintains a public license-verification system. You can verify a psychologist's current license before scheduling an evaluation.

We strongly encourage families to ask these questions before paying for an evaluation, particularly when the results may be used to obtain educational accommodations, disability services, medical treatment, or other ongoing supports.

Availability, services offered, insurance participation, and referral requirements can change. We recommend contacting providers directly to confirm that they are accepting new patients and that their services meet your needs.
